The Omni BJJ team came through big on May 19th at the Big Apple BJJ championship.  With just ten of our students competing, we managed to bring home 10 medals!  Of a reported 65 schools competing according to, Omni was 4th in team competition!

Tenzin Ngawang got the medal collecting going with a silver in the juvenile category.  Next, Alvaro Tautiva and Rafael Santana battled it out in the 154lb. final, with Rafael winning gold by a mere advantage!  No need to feel bad for Al, though, as he soon conquered gold in the absolute blue belt division after defeating his Omni teammate, Esteban (Steven) Leon in the final.  To round out the absolute, our own Josh James was third (along with a silver medal in the 194lb class).

Our white belts also came to fight, with "Super" Dave Michal taking home silver in the 194lb class after choking out his first two opponents.  In the evenings final fight, Andy Llerena fought to the end in the white belt absolute final, nearly sinking in a triangle before losing the match on points.  Silver medal to a guy who gets promoted on the podium after the fight isn't bad!  Even one of our newest students, Ed Peregrina fought in the 126 pound class, earning a bronze, and even tried his hand at the absolute!

All the competitors did an amazing job.  Look for Omni on the team podium next year!
